During the Battle of Perryville, the home served as General Braxton Bragg’s headquarters while Confederate forces occupied the area. The Battle of Perryville, fought on October 8, 1862, is recognized as the bloodiest battle of the Civil War fought in Kentucky, with more than 7,500 soldiers killed, wounded, or missing in a single day. Despite its scale and brutality, the battle was overshadowed in national attention by other conflicts occurring at the same time. One of the defining factors of the battle — and of life in Perryville during that period — was water scarcity. A severe drought had dried up creeks and water sources across the region. Soldiers on both sides fought not only each other, but exhaustion, dehydration, and confusion. Many accounts note that gunfire echoed through the Chaplin River valley as desperate troops searched for water, often unaware they were directly engaging the enemy. Perryville itself remained largely preserved after the war, allowing visitors today to experience a rare, intact historic landscape. Crawford House stands as part of that living history — a structure that witnessed command decisions, hardship, and the human cost of war firsthand. Staying here offers guests a unique opportunity to inhabit a place where history unfolded, not as observers from a distance, but within walls that were present during one of Kentucky’s most defining moments.
